31 October is a Saturday — the agent deadline that doesn't roll to Monday

Self-lodgers get Monday 2 November 2026. If you want a registered tax agent for this return, you need to be on their client list by Saturday 31 October.

"I'll sort the agent next week" still sounds reasonable in early October. The calendar for 2026 is less forgiving than the habit.

31 October 2026 is a Saturday. Plenty of people hear "31 October" and assume every version of that deadline slides to Monday. One of them does. The agent one does not.

Two clocks

This is the return for the 2025–26 income year, the one people lodge at Tax Time 2026. The ATO's September note to agents calls it the 2026 tax return.

Path What 31 October means this year
Lodge yourself in myTax 31 October is a weekend, so the due date is the next business day: Monday 2 November 2026
Use a registered tax agent Be engaged, and on their client list, by Saturday 31 October 2026. That Saturday does not move to Monday

The self-lodge rule is on the ATO's Preparing your tax return page (updated 27 April 2026). If you lodge your own return and 31 October falls on a weekend, the due date is the next business day. In 2026 that day is Monday 2 November.

The agent rule is the one people blur into the same sentence. The same page says that if you use a registered tax agent, you need to engage them before 31 October. Agents generally have special lodgment schedules and can lodge later than 31 October — once you are engaged in time.

For this particular Saturday, the ATO has been explicit with agents. On 3 September 2026 it published Lodge prior year returns and add new clients by 31 October (QC 107990): although 31 October falls on a weekend, new clients still have to be added to the client list by that date, not the next business day. Miss it, and the client does not receive the agent's lodgment program due date for their 2026 tax return.

The Review your client list page (updated 1 July 2026) says the same cutoff in program language: add new clients by 31 October 2026 so they are covered by the lodgment program for 2026–27. You can't add them on the next business day.

Engaging someone on Monday 2 November is already late for that program.

What "on their books" means

It is a step the agent takes, with a little time in front of it.

Contact a registered tax agent while there is still room in the month. You can confirm they are registered on the Tax Practitioners Board public register. They add you to their client list in Online services for agents or the practitioner lodgment service, and that add has to land by Saturday 31 October.

Some new clients have an extra step first. The 3 September note says some people need to nominate the agent, as part of client-to-agent linking, before the agent can add them to the list. If that applies to you, the nomination has to finish before the add. Leave a buffer. Friday 30 October is a poor day to start.

If Saturday passes

You can still lodge the return. You just lose the program date that being on the list by 31 October is there to buy.

Self-lodge by Monday 2 November. That is the weekend rule on the preparing-your-return page, and it still applies if the agent path has closed.

Or engage a registered agent after 31 October. They can still prepare the return. What the 3 September note says you do not get is their lodgment program due date for this 2026 tax return. The individual page only promises lodgment later than 31 October when you have engaged an agent in time. Eligible clients who were on the list by 31 October usually have a mid-May deadline; the wider calendar, including why July prefill is worth waiting for, is in Lodging your return: dates, prefill, and not rushing.

If 2 November is already going to be a problem, the ATO asks you to contact them as soon as you can. That sits on the same preparing-your-return page.

Either path still needs the records

Choosing an agent does not fill in your deductions. Prefill covers income the ATO already holds. It does not cover work expenses, and those are the lines you either type into myTax or hand to the agent.

Receipts, work kilometres, and work-from-home hours are the same job on both clocks. The Saturday only decides who lodges, and whether their deadline rolls. The folder is what makes either lodge possible.
