Lodging your return: dates, prefill, and not rushing
Why lodging on 2 July often backfires, what prefill covers, and the deadlines that matter for the 2025-26 return.

- Basics
Lodgment is the easy part, provided the year's records exist. Most of the friction is timing.

prefill --> self[31 October - lodge yourself or register with an agent]

The dates
- 1 July — lodgment opens for the year just finished
- Through July — employers finalise income statements; prefill from banks, health funds, and agencies arrives
- 31 October — deadline to lodge yourself, or to be registered with a registered tax agent
- Mid-May — the usual extended deadline for eligible tax agent clients
Registering with an agent by 31 October is what buys the extension. Deciding in February to use an agent doesn't retroactively grant it.
If you owe tax, lodging early doesn't bring the payment date forward — those are separate.
Why waiting a few weeks helps
Prefill isn't a courtesy; it's how the ATO cross-checks your return. Lodging before it lands means you're the only source of data, and any mismatch that arrives later becomes an amendment.
Prefill typically covers salary and wages from your income statement, bank interest, dividends, private health insurance, government payments, and some managed fund distributions. Check your income statement is marked tax ready before you lodge.
Prefill does not cover your deductions. Those are yours to supply and substantiate.
What you have to bring
For an ordinary PAYG return, the deduction side is a set of totals:
| Line | What you need behind it |
|---|---|
| Working from home | Total hours for the year, or apportioned actual costs |
| Car expenses | Work kilometres, or logbook percentage plus running costs |
| Tools and equipment | Receipts; decline in value for anything over $300 |
| Clothing and laundry | Category, receipts, loads and rate |
| Self-education | Fees, materials, related travel |
| Other work expenses | Union fees, memberships, subscriptions, income protection |
Each of those is one number by October — but only if something was recording it in November.
Doing it yourself vs an agent
Self-lodging through myTax is fine for a straightforward salary, a handful of deduction categories, and no unusual events. An agent earns their fee when there's a rental property, shares with capital gains, crypto, a business on the side, multiple employers, or a year with something odd in it — and the fee itself is deductible next year.
Either way, the preparation is identical. The agent's value is judgement, not data entry.
After you lodge
- Most returns are processed in about two weeks.
- Keep your records for five years from the date you lodged, longer for depreciating assets.
- You can amend if you find something you missed; you generally have two years for a straightforward individual amendment.
The one habit worth forming
Everything above is downstream of a single question: did the year's expenses, trips, and hours get written down as they happened?
If yes, lodging takes an evening. If no, you spend that evening reconstructing what you can prove — and claiming less than you were entitled to.
